In this guide
Agentic software is software where your team and AI agents work in the same system, under the same rules.
People use the screens to review, decide, edit and approve. AI agents take on tasks with clear limits: gathering information, checking records, drafting replies and lining up next steps. They use the same permissions, business rules and up-to-date information as your staff.
Nothing the AI does goes around your rules. Its actions are visible and recorded. Handing work to an agent becomes a designed, controlled step inside your software, not a workaround beside it.
In short
People make the decisions. AI agents take on tasks with clear limits. Both work under the same rules, so every action is permitted, visible and recorded.
A common question
Is this the same as agentic AI?
Agentic AI describes what the technology can do: plan steps and take actions. Agentic software is the product built around it. Its rules, permissions and records decide what the AI is allowed to do, and keep a record of what it did.
How it works
Two ways in. One set of rules.
Underneath most business software is a set of actions: create a record, check it against policy, draft a reply, send work for approval. Agentic software defines each action once, with clear inputs, checks and permissions.
Operate
The interface
People review the detail, make changes, use their judgement and approve the decisions that matter.
Delegate
The AI agent
An approved agent works toward the goal, takes steps within its limits, and hands back its working plus any decisions that need a person.
Same permissions · same information · one audit trail
Both routes run through the same actions. There is no special back door for the AI around your business rules, security or accountability. Use the screens when you want to do the work. Hand it to an agent when you want it done.
A useful distinction
What it is not.
01A chatbot
A chatbot talks. Agentic software acts. An assistant that can only answer questions still leaves the work with you.
02Fixed automation
Automation is excellent at the same steps, repeated. An agent can work out the steps toward a goal, adjust when things change, and know when to hand a decision back to a person.
03A copilot bolted on
An AI panel can make software easier to use without changing what it can do, or who is allowed to do it. Agentic software changes how the work gets done.
The defining feature
Governance belongs inside the product.
The useful test is simple: when the AI acts, whose rules is it following? In agentic software the answer is clear, because the controls are built into the system, not written in a policy beside it.
01
Clear permissions
Every action the AI can take has set inputs, checks and permission rules.
02
Checks match the stakes
Work that matters, or is hard to undo, waits for review and approval.
03
Actions stay on the record
The system records what happened, who authorised it and what the result was.
04
People can intervene
Work in progress can be seen, paused and corrected. Delegation is never surrender.
A typical shape
What it can look like in practice.
Imagine a service team handling requests. Each one needs details checked against records, a policy check, a drafted reply and a supervisor's sign-off. Today a skilled officer often does all four, even though the first three are mostly routine.
With agentic software, an AI agent gathers the file, runs the checks, drafts the reply and sends the package for approval with its working attached. The officer reviews, adjusts and approves. The record shows who did what.
This is an illustrative example, not a client case study. How much to hand to an agent depends on the stakes, the uncertainty and whether mistakes can be undone.
The goal is not to remove people from the work. It is to give them more capacity for the judgement only they can provide.
Questions
Frequently asked.
No. A chatbot talks; agentic software acts. An assistant that can only answer questions still leaves the work with you.
Not necessarily. It can be a new product, an upgrade to software you already have, an internal tool or one feature inside a larger system. We start by mapping what your current systems already do.
It depends on the work. The higher the stakes, and the harder a mistake is to undo, the more a person should review or approve.
Councils, government teams and established organisations whose work needs checking, sign-off and a clear record. It suits teams ready to rethink how work gets done, not just move an old process onto new screens.
